Flexible working must be 'day one right', says UK CIPD

One in three office workers want to continue working from home after the coronavirus threat has passed, a survey has revealed.

The study from the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) found that 32 per cent of people are expecting to work at least some of their time from home after restrictions are lifted.

Findings come as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said the right to request flexible working should become a day one right.

Currently the request can only be made after 26-weeks. CIPD said this would support the expected shift to more widespread and regular homeworking.

CIPD’s own research, based on a survey of 1,046 employers, showed that most employers believe people working from home are as productive as other workers, with 28% of employers believing the increase in homeworking has increased productivity or efficiency, compared to 28% of organisations that report the opposite effect.

Over a third (37%) don’t believe there has been any effect on productivity or efficiency.

Peter Cheese, Chief Executive of the CIPD said there would be a new set of advantages with the shift to more home working: “Greater use of home working will make work more accessible and sustainable for all, particularly for people with caring responsibilities and those with mobility or health concerns.

“This shift will support and encourage employers to recruit and retain a more diverse workforce which is good for the economy and society at large.

"For many people more flexible working opportunities and choice over when and where they work can give a better work-life balance and support for overall mental and physical wellbeing.”

The CIPD reminded government of its pledge to consult on whether to make flexible working the default position unless employers have a good reason not to.
