UK yoghurt firm fined for burns incident

By on

A yogurt manufacturer has been fined £600,000 after an acid spill which caused serious injuries at a factory in Telford.

An engineer with T M Telford Dairy suffered serious burns from contact with nitric acid cleaning solution that had a temperature of 650C, when working on a faulty valve on a CIP (cleaning in place) system.

The valve blew off under pressure and the hot acidic cleaning fluid surged out, hitting the roof overhead and spraying on to the worker and a colleague.

HSE found the firm had not formally trained the two engineers in lock-off and isolation procedures, use of permits to work or carried out risk assessments for the safe removal of valves. It did not have a suitable or safe system of work in place.

T M Telford Dairy Ltd was fined for breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
