The NEBOSH National General Certificate is a Level 3 qualification which is equivalent to an A-Level.
The qualification comprises three units:
|NGC1||Management of health and safety|
|GC2||Controlling workplace hazards|
|GC3||Health and safety practical application|
Most students undertake the qualification as follows:
|Week 1||NGC1 (5 days in the classroom)|
|Week 2||Back at work and revising for NGC1|
|Week 3||GC2 (5 days in the classroom)|
|Week 4||Back at work and revising for GC2|
Our handbook contains a copy of the syllabus. If you want to familiarise yourself with the syllabus beforehand, it can be downloaded here.
The textbook, provided on the course, can be downloaded here.
On the first day, please arrive at the venue by 8.45am. The course will start promptly at 9.00am. The first four days of the course will finish between 4.45 – 5.00pm. The final day will finish at the slightly earlier time of 4.00pm.
Learner resource area
The Learner Resource Area contains important information in relation to your course and assessments. We recommend that you access the Learner Resource Area now and read the information carefully.
There may be some pre-course work to do. If you have studied with us before and have an online account, please login to your britsafe account.
If you do not have an account, you will receive a separate email within 24 hours containing your log in details and instructions on how to access the Learner Resource Area. If you do not receive this email, please contact us as detailed below.
In the classroom
Your tutor will guide you through the syllabus and, through a series of practical exercises and tutorials, provide you with core knowledge and understanding of the various topics.
Our aim is to provide you with knowledge and understanding of health and safety management systems that can be applied in the workplace and to make sure that you are properly prepared for the examination.
You will be provided with a NEBOSH-endorsed textbook and a structured handbook in which you will be able to write down the key things that you need to learn for the examination.
We believe in active learning by ‘doing and discussing’, rather than ‘death by PowerPoint’. A lot of time will be spent discussing things, either in pairs or as a class, so please be prepared to get involved.
We also believe that you learn by writing things down, not by staring at a screen. Come prepared to write down key points, albeit with guidance from the tutor.
Examinations scheduling and timings
NGC1 and GC2 are assessed via 2-hour written examinations taken in the morning and afternoon respectively. The practical assessment (GC3) is completed in your workplace and must be submitted within 5 working days of the written examinations.
|NGC1 examination times||09:30 - 11:30|
|NGC2 examination times||14:00 - 16:00|
Most students find that undertaking the qualification in 4-5 weeks provides them with the necessary focus.
However, it is a pretty intensive experience and you should make sure that your diary is as clear as possible. You are advised to negotiate some ‘breathing space’ with your employer in which to undertake your revision and complete the practical assessment.
You will be coached in examination technique and practise a lot of past questions. There will be a full (2 hour) mock examination on the final morning of each week, followed by a comprehensive debrief in the afternoon. We will provide model answers to the mock examination.
You will need to spend at least 50 hours of your own time revising. That is a recommendation from both NEBOSH and ourselves. You will be given advice on how to revise effectively.
Assessment registration and fees
Examination transfers are subject to availability and may incur additional fees.
There will be a feedback form to complete at the end of the course. As well as providing feedback to the British Safety Council, you are able to provide feedback directly to NEBOSH ([email protected]sh.org.uk) and to their regulator, the Scottish Qualifications Authority ([email protected]).
