What’s the outcome?

You will achieve the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety which is an SCQF Level 6 qualification.

A comprehensive foundation course that will provide you with a good understanding of the principles and practice of managing risk in the workplace and the confidence to apply your knowledge.

Course information

The qualification comprises two units:

Unit IG1 covers the management of health and safety and is assessed via an open-book exam completed online.

Unit IG2 covers hazards and risk assessment and is assessed via a practical risk assessment based on a workplace.

If you are studying digitally the units are studied at your own pace, for classroom courses unit IG1 is taught in week 1 and IG2 in week 2.

Course requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.

Enrolment period

Most students complete this course within 6 months. NEBOSH allows you up to 5 years to complete both assessments, we will provide access to resources and support until you complete your qualification.

Assessment and Results

Unit IG1: Open book examination is completed online via the NEBOSH exam portal, to which you have 24 hours access.   On average you should allocate approximately 5 hours to complete the exam. You’ll be awarded a grading for the IG1, as outlined below

  • Pass: 45-64 marks
  • Credit: 65-74 marks
  • Distinction: 75+ marks.

Unit IG2: Workplace-based risk assessment task. Completed in a workplace and submitted to BSC via email. IG2 is marked either a pass or refer (fail).

You must successfully pass both units to achieve your full NEBOSH International General Certificate.

NEBOSH will email you your results directly approximately 50 working days from your assessment.

You will receive your certificate parchment within 8 weeks of the successful completion of both unit assessments.

Professional recognition

NEBOSH qualifications are recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

In your workplace - In-company Delivery

Either virtual class or we can visit your workplace or a third party venue and deliver this 9-day course on dates of your choice.

Our online programme includes tutorial videos, a digital text book, interactive exercises, and practice questions to make sure you are fully prepared for the IG1 examination and IG2 risk assessment task. You will also have access to our Study Support Hub, full of additional technical and soft skill resources to assist you with your study techniques and overcome procrastination and self-doubt, to enable you to excel in your learning. You will also have free, unlimited access, to our Study Support tutors and can engage in our student forum community. 

Study in your own time with tutorial videos, a digital textbook, interactive exercises, practice questions, and access to study support resources.

Virtual classroom - Live Online Classes

Attend scheduled virtual classroom sessions with trainer support, structured study plans, and guided preparation for both IG1 and IG2.

The course is taught by a tutor just as it would be in a classroom. In fact, our virtual classroom tutors are the same tutors who facilitate our face to face training. Students join remotely using a PC, laptop or tablet and download the relevant software in advance to gain entry. Students can see and interact with the tutor and with each other throughout the course. PowerPoint slides, videos and whiteboard are all fully visible, with tutors able to switch seamlessly between any of these media.
